Back To School!
What? Are you kidding me? Again? Where would I find the time? These are all the things that were going through my mind, when I realized that in order to make my dreams come true, I would have to get a degree. I had been to school many times as an adult and never completed a degree of any sort, so why should this time be any different? I am happy to announce that it was different this time and it is all due to KAPLAN UNIVERSITY! From the very beginning, I knew that this school was the one for me. At first I was looking for a school that offered a degree in Human Services as well as legal studies as I was interested in both, then I was looking at a school that fit my schedule. Kaplan fit both of those requirements for me. I began to do my research and decided that this was the place to be, and thus I present this website to you today as a graduate with a Human Services Child and Family Welfare degree.
Staff: The staff at Kaplan is nothing short of amazing. I did not have one professor that I did not get along with. I suffered the tragic loss of two loved ones during my time in school and received nothing but compassion and understanding with my studies. The professors where knowledgeable and experienced in their field. I felt it was their desire to see each and every student become the very best that they can be. As an upperclassman, I actually missed not attending seminars, just for the fact that I did not get the interaction with the professors. When registering for new classes, I was always certain to get a friendly voice on the phone. I can not say that I ever complained about any one person at Kaplan University.
Classroom: After my first two weeks in class, I knew the classroom inside and out. It is designed so that it is easily understood by the student. I knew at all times what was expected of me and when it was due. The graphics are user friendly and does not allow for boredom. The professors where sure to keep the students updated on the message board, which left us free to feel confident in our ability to meet the professors requirements. The discussions boards are extremely fun! I have made several friends over the course of the last few years. Some of which, I now communicate with via the phone or Facebook. More importantly, the vast array of culture and knowlege brought to one area allowed for an expanded growth in my education. I always found people to be respectful and appreciative of each other and what they had to offer.
Who Has Helped Me: There are so many that helped me along the way, but at the top of the list would be all my professors. Without there guidance and encouragement, this journey would have been a lot more challenging. There is a fine line between professionalism and becoming to friendly, but I found that the professors at Kaplan had a firm grasp on creating a friendly professional environment and relationship. I felt that their rapport building skills were outstanding. Of course the support of those in academic advising and financial aide was always appreciated as well. At times both of these processes can be overwhelming and again the staff was AMAZING! But I would be negligent if I did not mention my family. It was there love, patients and support that allowed me to focus and persevere.
What Inspired Me: Well, truth be told, I was inspired and passionate about what I was going to be doing before enrolling in school. I knew that in order to be effective though, I would need an education. What Kaplan did do for me over the last couple of years is fuel my fire and passion. Kaplan showed me not only how much these children need me, but also how I can positively touch and change lives. This came from the vast array of courses that were required of me. Each one adding a piece to the grand puzzle. We all have a divine plan for our life, but we can not skip straight from point A right to point Z. There are many small steps in-between and for me obtaining my degree through Kaplan was one of them.
Most Frustrating Moment: This is easy....Statistics! I thought this class was going to finish me. As a matter a fact I tried to drop this class four times. I called academic advising in tears on multiple occasions and every time I was able to be calmed and encouraged. I made a couple of friends in this class and we would spend hours on the phone discussing the assignments in an effort to get a grasp on what we were doing. My son at the end of the term told one of these friends that he was thankful for her, because without her he might not have survived the term. I finished the class with a strong B, and this was once again due to the encouragement of the staff and some new found friends. Thank you for not letting me quit.
Do I feel Confident and Qualified? YES! YES! YES! As a matter of fact, this became evident in my recent trip to the Philippines. I found myself reflecting back to my training in many different areas. Cultural differences was one of the big ones. I did not realize the enormous effect this was going to have in my career. I am confident that I can work anywhere in the Human Services field and be a productive worker. With the top quality education that Kaplan has provided me and the experience of life, I know I am qualified to work among the best.
